The correct scientific name was reluctantly changed to Chrysopogon in 1999 by JF Veldkamp [1], because the identity of Vetiveria species and Chrysopogon was confirmed by DNA fingerprinting [2] and Chrysopogon is an older name than Vetiveria. However, the name Vetiveria is also over 100 years old and is still widely used.

Vetiveria zizanoides is a perennial grass originally from India and Malay. It can grow in the full range of soil types and does not spread by rhizome or stolon. The best growing temperature is around 25C and higher but it resists cold (-15C) or dry (300-600 mm/y) weather. It is considered the best grass to prevent soil from runoff. It was the best plant among 20 candidates which CSR's Agricultural Experiment Station, Lautoka, Fiji tested.[3]
